One of the easiest ways to lower your risk for heart disease and other related conditions is by eating better. Here are 11 simple steps you can take today to cut down on sodium, sugar, and cholesterol while increasing fiber intake:
- Stop cooking with salt
- Switch from butter or margarine to a healthier low calorie spread like apple sauce or avocado oil
- Use olive oil instead of vegetable oil when frying foods in a pan for three minutes (just don’t go over that time limit!)
- Don’t use any corn syrup at all – even as an ingredient! A teaspoon doesn’t sound like much but it’s actually twenty times what our body needs so be sure not to eat anything containing high fructose corn syrup
- Try to avoid foods that are high in sodium such as canned soup, pickles and frozen dinners. You can also reduce the salt content by using a little less water when cooking pasta or rice – this will make it taste lighter!
- Use whole grain breads instead of white bread for sandwiches
- Cut down your fat consumption (but don’t cut out all fats!) by leaving off the cheese on pizzas before baking them so you won’t be adding any extra calories
- Replace sugary drinks with low calorie options like sugarless tea or black coffee
