The new jersey vt men’s basketball team is ranked #5 in the nation and has earned the nickname the “Suns.” The team has compiled a 23-6 record in conference play including a 15-2 mark in the Patriot League. The team is led by junior forward Matt Hegarty, who is averaging a double-double with 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. The team is also led by senior guard Mike Pizzo, who is averaging 15.
The team name stands for “Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball,” but if you’re wondering about the “Tech” part, you’re not alone. The team was originally known as the Virginia Tech Hokies, and is currently coached by head coach Rob Pelinka.
The team is currently ranked #23 in the B1G, and as usual, Virginia Tech has a lot of depth, with the addition of forwards Chris Jones and Eric Williams as well as redshirt senior forward Jeffery Williams. Both Jones and Williams are first-team all-conference as well.
If youre not aware, Tech is a pretty big basketball team. Not only do they have two of the top three scorers in the B1G (Jayson Tatum and C.J. Williams), they also have two of the top three players in VCU history (C.J. and Tatum). The Tech men are also one of the youngest programs in the country, with just 2.5 seniors on the roster.
Tech men have never had a problem getting young players playing time, but it was only recently that the school began to turn its attention to the recruiting of seniors. In the last few years, the program has been very aggressive with recruiting the older players. Last year, junior guard Matt Riddle transferred in from Penn State.
Last year’s senior class includes a guy like J.R. Smith, who transferred from UVA. Smith was the best player on the team that year, and was the top player on the team last year. He has always been a good defensive player, and is an excellent rebounder and shot blocker. He could be the best shooter in the country. But he also has been one of the best rebounders in the country. He was the top rebounder for the conference in league play.
The Virginia Tech team that year was the best in the country in league play, scoring the most points per game in the NCAA and making the most 3-pointers in the ACC. What makes Riddle the best prospect in the state of Virginia is that he has a lot of athletic ability that no one else on the team has. He’s not a fast guy, but he’s very strong and athletic. He’s also strong enough that he can put up a lot of points in a hurry.
I thought the Riddle recruit was going to be a top-five pick, but he never had a chance. He was a late-round pick, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he gets a second-round pick too.
If we’re being honest, VBT’s biggest recruit (and possibly its most athletic) is guard/forward/guard Greg Riddle. The guy was a late-round pick (no pick in college basketball history) and had just signed with the team as a free agent. And unlike most of the other prospects on the Riddle team, he was very athletic, and had a few other tools that could come in handy, as well.
Riddle is a former Division-I player, but he’s not a big scorer. In fact he’s a guy who can play any position on the floor and has one of the best handles in the draft. He’s a big guy with a 7’3″, 210-pound frame and a lot of potential.
