Mental Health Blog: Your Daily Dose of Mental Wellness

Mental health issues are on the rise in America. Mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety are now among the leading causes of disability, with over 16 million adults experiencing a mood disorder and more than 40 million adults living with an anxiety disorder (National Institute of Mental Health). These statistics show that mental illness is not just reserved for celebrities or those who have fallen from grace; it affects everyday people. This mental health blog is designed to help you improve your mental wellness through daily posts about topics such as self-care, mindfulness, stress management, and recovery.

A recent survey found that less than 50% of Americans get adequate sleep. Sleep deprivation can lead to health issues including obesity, heart disease, diabetes type II high blood pressure, stroke cell damage in the brain, and more. Mental health is affected too. Sleep loss has been shown to increase impulsiveness, decrease problem solving skills, impair memory, and reduce attention span (Carney et al). If you are struggling with sleep deprivation or know someone who is suffering from it as well this Mental Health Blog post might be helpful for you!

Self Care:

Self care can take many forms including getting enough rest by practicing good sleep hygiene such as using your bed only for sleeping and avoiding television before bedtime; meditating; practicing yoga; or finding time for a hobby. Mental Health Blog will provide you with self-care tips every day so that you can better your mental wellness and feel at peace in the world.

Mindfulness:

Mindful living is all about consciously paying attention to what’s happening now, which brings us back into our bodies and minds from an autopilot mode (Luders). It means taking care of ourselves by eating mindfully when hungry rather than out of boredom; doing things like walking through nature without distractions such as cell phones, etc.; and finally just being present and aware of what’s happening. Your Daily Dose of Mental Wellness will discuss the importance of mindfulness so you can feel at peace in this hectic world!

Stress Management:

Stress is a natural response to life events, but it doesn’t always have to be negative (Gorman). In fact, we need some stress in order for us to grow as individuals because it gives energy and boosts productivity. Sometimes our brains are overly sensitive or overreact when faced with stressful stimuli which causes an array of symptoms such as insomnia, headaches, stomachaches, increased heart rate etc.

Recovery:

Mental health is a topic that needs to be talked about more openly. The stigma surrounding mental illness and how people who suffer from these illnesses are viewed in society is something Recovery can take many forms such as getting into therapy or taking medication; but what does this even mean?

It’s Mental Awareness Week, and we are celebrating with a blog post. Mental health is an important topic that affects our lives every day. Mental health can affect how you feel about yourself as well as your everyday functioning; it impacts your relationships, work life, social interactions and more!
