For the past two weeks, I have had the pleasure of meeting with a few premier technology aqua vendors. I’ve never met a more forward-thinking company in my life than this one.
The one thing that I have come to accept is that every new company is looking to make a dent in the world. Many of the current startups are going after a few of the big problems — like creating a company culture that values innovation and collaboration and not just the latest and greatest.
In the past, the biggest barrier to entry has been the fear that the new company would fail and be acquired by a larger company. Now, however, the biggest barrier has been the fear that the new company would fail and fail, and everyone would have to leave the valley and go find a new one, which has led to companies like these.
Now, the technology that will solve the big problems is available for startups, so they can create a culture that supports it. But the companies that are going to solve the problems are the ones that will create the jobs and the wealth, which is exactly what those companies are going to want.
And that’s exactly what this is about, a culture of startups. When a startup creates a new technology, it creates new jobs. It creates new wealth. And it creates a new company with new values.
When a startup creates a new technology, and wants to use it to create jobs, it will have a culture, and that culture will be the same as the values of the company. If you want to create a new company that will create new jobs and a new culture, you will need to create a new culture. But that culture needs to be compatible with the values of the companies that are creating the jobs and the wealth, because they need the same values.
That’s the difference between companies and cultures. Culture is the overall set of values that you want to represent your company. A company with a low-key culture might include being nice to everyone, while the tech company that is growing will have a less “hacker” culture. But the values are the same.
This reminds me of a great movie I watched years ago called “The Last Samurai”, which is about a group of guys who started a technology company called Apple. But Apple wasn’t actually Apple and the other guys were just assholes.
You could say that Apple is a company that values its culture. And that would be nice to have, but let’s face it, Apple just does what it wants to do. But the same goes for many other companies.
So, a company with a culture is a company that is not afraid to do the wrong thing. Apple is a company on one side of the fence, the other side is companies that treat their customers badly. The same goes for many other companies.
