vet tech starting salary

In the summer of 2016 I started my vet tech position in Virginia. I was employed with a local vet tech school and earned $20.00 per hour.

This is also a good time to point out that the vet tech school I was employed with paid a starting salary of $17.50 per hour.

This is a common misconception about vet techs. They are not paid by the hour, and in fact the school’s website says they don’t work for tips.

Vet techs are not paid by the hour, but instead by the number of hours the vet tech worked. This is common because some vets are more expensive than others, so any vet technician who is willing to work over 18 hours a week is going to make more money in a month than one who works 10. We really can’t ask for more than that. We’re fortunate to be able to offer a very competitive base salary, and a great benefit package, so that’s what we’re offering. No doubt, if we were to look at the state of the industry, we could pay even more. The Vet Bureau of New York, with $18,000 salaries and benefits, is easily the highest paid vet organization in the US.
