We’ve recently had a chance to attend a midland tech continuing education event, and it was very interesting. The attendees were very diverse and included both college and high school kids, along with industry professionals. One of the main themes the attendees were discussing was the increasing number of students now entering college with no prior experience in the field and how this would affect their future.
There was a lot of emphasis on how college graduates are being asked to do things they don’t want to do. For example, one attendee said to the other: “If you take a job at midland tech and you’re not a programmer you’ll have to do a lot of your own coding.” Another attendee said they were told by the college they attended that they would be required to be programmers.
One attendee said that midland tech was looking to hire a lot of computer science majors in the middle of the school year and that they were not sure what that meant for midland tech. Another attendee said that midland tech was giving out college credit for college work that they dont have. Another attendee said that midland tech was not looking to hire computer science graduates and he didnt know what that meant for computer science.
There is one major difference between midland tech and other tech schools, even the ones that are not specifically focused on computer science. Midland tech’s classes are taught entirely in the computer language Racket, which is an object-oriented language. It is designed to teach students how to do a lot of really cool things in Racket, like using libraries, using data structures, using functions to manipulate data, and much more.
